Our family recently learned a lesson about getting what you pay for. We have a 8 month old Chocolate Lab mix. We started him on L.I.D. Lamb and Brown Rice Formula when we got him at 4 months. My theory was "good food in" would result in "less money out" in vet bills. I had also read that labs can have allergy problems with chicken ingredients. Well, we have certainly been hit with very hard times. My husband is in the construction business. So in an effort to save money, we tried the Costco Lamb and Rice dog food. It does have chicken fat as an ingredient, but I didn't think it would have an impact. I was wrong! Less than one bag of that food and our poor dog was losing piles of fur everyday. I could have made another dog with all the fur I swept up. His coat lost all of its shine. He also began licking his paws, which I know is a symptom of allergies. Needless to say, I knew that we had to put him back on your food. Less than one bag of your food, he was back to his old self! I recommend your product line whenever the subject comes up. I had to write and tell you about our experience with your Natural Balance® Potato and Duck formula. Four years ago, our vet concluded that Laila, our lab/border collie/chow mix, had a food allergy and recommended an elimination diet. Laila would not touch the prescription diet from the vet, but then I found your potato and duck. She loved it. Her problems cleared up within a matter of weeks, her coat was suddenly gorgeous and her hot spots were gone. With those kind of results, I wasn't about to change her food and she has been on your potato and duck LID ever since.

However, when I tried to transition Laila to your new formula, things became difficult. Her digestive issues were awful, she had gas and very soft stools. We proceeded very slowly with the transition, but things only got worse. I read on some site that your new formula had reduced protein from meat, but a quick call to your customer service (wonderful) cleared that up when I was reassured that, like the old formula, the new had 60% of its protein from the meat source. I purchased a bag of your venison formula and was ready to switch her to that, but decided to wait until the duck transition was complete. Voila! Overnight, (and I mean that literally!), once she was on the new duck formula 100%, the digestive issues completely cleared up! She now loves the new duck formula, but was very picky about it when the old formula was mixed in. Since puppy hood, she has never had such healthy stools. Her coat is again gorgeous, she has great energy and she seems so happy!

In another positive development, I decided to give her some of the sweet potato and venison kibble, since we already had it, just to see if she likes it. She adores it! I've noticed no allergic response or sensitivity. I am so thrilled that she has another food to eat every once in a while. For now, we are in good shape, but I thought I would share this with you. If other owners are having trouble with the transition from the old duck to the new, it just could be that their dog will also be fine with the new duck formula once the dog is on it at 100%. My three year old boxer had a severe food reaction about a year ago. He was unable to absorb food, and his 70 lb frame emaciated down to 53 lbs. The lining of his intestines were failing to absorb nutrients, and I came very close to losing him.
